Flying Doctors Nigeria recently carried out a free medical evacuation for a young man from Lagos to Sokoto, as part of our CSR program.
Bakare Abiodun is a 27 year old man with sickle cell anaemia. A graduate of Olabisi Onabanjo University, he is bedridden due to sickle cell complications.
He was diagnosed with Ankylosis of both knees and Avascular Necrosis of the right femur, this has made it impossible for him to sit, stand or walk. He is unable to sit on a chair due to his outstretched legs. He needs bilateral knee replacement surgeries, as well as a total hip replacement so he will be able to walk again.
He has only been able to raise 1,085 USD of 20,000 USD required for this complex surgeries. Please make donations here to help make Bakare walk again.
Flying Doctors Nigeria contributed to this by carrying out his air transport worth one million naira from Lagos to the hospital in Sokoto where the surgeries are to be carried out. He was also accompanied by one of our medical personnel to provide medical care en-route, including provision of oxygen, pain relief and professional handling.
Air transport was preferred over road transportation because of the long-distance (journey from Lagos- Sokoto by road, would have lasted about 13 hours instead of 2 hours by air), speed, comfort and security. To learn more about the advantages of air ambulances, click here and here.
