In recent weeks, Nigeria has been dealing with a severe cholera outbreak, and has recorded 1,528 suspected cases and 53 deaths across all states. Here is what you need to know to protect yourself and your loved ones!
What is Cholera? Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal infection caused by ingestion of food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. It spreads through contaminated food and water, usually in areas with inadequate water treatment, poor sanitation, and insufficient hygiene. It can lead to death within hours if untreated.
What are the Symptoms? Most people infected with V. cholerae do not develop any symptoms. It takes between 12 hours and 5 days after infection for a person to show symptoms. Common symptoms include:
- Dizziness
- Vomiting
- Fever
- Dehydration
- Weakness (muscle cramps)
Treatment – If you develop any of these symptoms, it is important to seek medical attention immediately. Early treatment with rehydration therapy (with oral rehydration salts/ IV infusions) would help replace lost fluids.
Prevention
- Wash hands with soap and clean water regularly
- Drink clean and safe water
- Eat food that is thoroughly cooked and hot, avoid raw foods
You can also get the cholera vaccine to prevent infection. The vaccine can be taken by anyone above the age of two years old, just 2 doses are required. If you would like to be vaccinated, reach out to us at emergency@flyingdoctorsnigeria.com or call 0700 FLYINGDRS (0700 6594 64377).
